Emoji Review by Rebecca Dixon
I just finished βCity of Thorns,β the first book in The Demon Queen Trials by CN Crawford and we have a winner, winner, chicken dinner folks!! ππ» π
OK! So that may be a bit QUIRKY of an opening π β¦ but TRUST ME! Itβs totally fitting with this FMC! Quirky is in this galβs DNA (among other things π€ππ?!)
So this book starts of with a college age FMC who tries to do well in school π« so she can be accepted into an undergraduate school beyond βcity limits!β But thatβs where the normalcy stops and the originality kicks in! ππ» This ainβt no normal graduate schoolβ¦ itβs in the City of Thorns β¦ a demon πΉ ruled city where mortals either serve demons or pretty much get tossed into the BURNING RAIN OF DEATH π²π²π²!!! (ok π, itβs really burning flames π₯ in a pit β¦ but I was totally feeling Hocus Pocus at the moment π€ͺ!) But WAIT βπ»! Before we even get started in an Academy themed book (thank GOODNESS, my TBR is already full of them π,) the plotline changes course when a hunky powerful πͺπ» demon swoops up all in there and then a case of mistaken SUCCUBUS π identity (or is it π€·π»ββοΈ, I still donβt know π !) causes our girl to enter the city in an entirely different, CAPTIVE-ating way!
Ok, so first off! This FMC is FUN π€©. I actually posted in the authorβs FB page after reading the first few chapters stating, βMe thinks Christine (one of the authors) had A LOT to do with the quirkiness of Rowan in City of Thorns.β Because if you follow the author on FB (and you totally should, they are super fun π€©,) youβll DEFINITELY notice similarities between this FMC and our beloved author π. So back to the FMC! OMG π. I literally cackled out loud during a certain dungeon scene ! π€£π€£π€£ And letβs just say, this girl takes safety β preparations to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL and Iβm LOVING it ππ»ππ»π! (FYI it TOTALLY puts my Safety Engineer Dad, who is literally a rocket π scientist in real life, to shame! π²π β¦ and yup, he did make my whole family memorize FIRE π₯ EXIT maps in every hotel we stayed at growing up! π β¦ but I digress πβ¦)
So! Not only did I love π this FMC, I REALLY loved β€οΈ our broody, vengeance driven MMC! ππ» His sharp intake of breaths and the enemies-to-lovers heat π₯ between these two is SIZZLING π₯΅! Letβs just say that romantic tension that CN Crawford is so great at, didnβt disappoint! ππ» Not only do we get this sharp tongued, doesnβt miss a thing π₯ MMC β¦ we also get another handsome π₯΅ contender whoβs searing eyes π scream across the room at our girl! SWOON!! This doesnβt appear to be a love triangle, but Iβm not completely writing it off yet! And to be honest, Iβll totally take it! πππ
But what about the story?! Well! This is what Iβd consider more along the lines of an enemies-to-lovers, slow-burn romance that takes place in a world similar to ours and circles around a mistaken/unknown identity trope! And let me tell you! This mistaken identity plotline is super great! π€© Really entertaining π! Watching our girl βexploreβ her ID is a heck of a lot of fun π₯³! Heck, the entire plotline is pretty great! Itβs SMARTπ‘. I have never learned so much about psychology in my life π ! And the way the FMC handles her precarious situation, is super CLEVER π§ and made me crack-up when she whipped out her arsenal of MacGyver worthy workarounds π‘π₯½π§―! π€£π€£π€£
This plotline actually covered A LOT of ground in ONE book! I was actually thinking that this one book held probably three books of content compared to other series Iβve read! It moves pretty fast (in a great way ππ») and answered waaaay more questions than I ever expected for a first book! But it also left us with the perfect amount of mystery π at the end! And OH BOY THAT ENDING! ππ» SO AWESOME π€©π€©π€©! Yesssssssss ππ»ππ»ππ» I actually had an βAwwww that is pretty freaking cool πβ moment at the end where the entire book felt like it came full circle! I can just tell that every detail was so thought out by the authors & I am totally crazy about books like that! ππ»ππ»ππ»
So if you love a pretty original fantasy plotline with a FMC who has a quirkiness π€ͺ that goes on for days, a broody smokin π₯ MMC, a steamy slow-burn enemies-to-lovers vibe, some pretty SMART π‘mystery in the story, and SUCCUBUS πππ mistaken/unknown identityβ¦ give this a shot! Itβs free on KU and you never know, it may be the next book to SEDUCE YOU!
